Marilyn said during their many tours overseas, the flag and the national anthem represented a home. She and her husband are both retired Navy Officers. Marilyn Orbann, who attended the concert with her husband Carl, sat in the sparse shade of a fledgling tree and cooled herself with an American flag-themed fan. Organizers handed out lyrics sheets for the crowd to sing along, but the impromptu chorus struggled with the unfamiliar verses that follow the beginning everyone knows. “I think the gravity of these words resonate with people, and their power has lasted for 200 years,” said Kathleen Winchester, regent of the local Daughters of the American Revolution said of the lyrics. As the song’s familiar first notes resonated from the organ, audience members stood, their hands on their hearts. ![]() ![]() Other well-loved patriotic tunes were played by city organist Carol Williams, including “America, The Beautiful,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” (which, while not specifically patriotic, is a very American song.)īut the shining star of the ensemble was the anthem in its entirety. The musical homage was organized by the San Diego chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
